The currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND) although US Dollars and Euros are widely accepted in many hotels, restaurants and shops?

Vietnam’s currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Though US Dollars and Euros are widely accepted at most hotels and tourist targeted restaurants and shops, the VND is accepted everywhere and necessary if you want to patronize local establishments.
Notes are available in denominations of VND 500,000; 100,000; 50,000; 20,000; 10,000; 5,000; 2,000 and 1,000. Coins are available in VND 5,000; 2,000 and 1,000, but are not popular in daily exchange and are almost never used. As of Feb 21st 2011, 1 USD equals 20,700VND. The USD is quickly becoming the main foreign currency in Vietnam. If you’re bringing in USD to be exchanged, bring clean bank notes as dirty or ripped tender may be refused. Big notes (USD 50 and USD 100) are also recommended and often fetch a better exchange rate than smaller o¬nes.

Payment by VISA, Master Card and American Express are accepted at major hotels, restaurants, and shops in urban areas. Please note that all payments by credit card bear a 3% to 4% bank commission. Traveler’s Checks are changeable at banks and money exchanges all over the country. For a Traveler’s Check of 100USD, the commission is 1USD at Vietcombank and 2USD at ANZ Bank. Cash withdrawal can also be done in urban areas and tourist destinations through the ATM.
